Ismael is a founding partner and director of GALBAIAN. He is a telecommunications engineer. He began his career in the field of Intellectual Property (IP) in 1998 upon joining the Industrial Property Department of the Fagor Group as a patent adviser. He headed the Department from 2005 until the founding of GALBAIAN in 2011.

After acquiring a complete overview of IP in the Master’s Degree IP course (Magister Lvcentinvs) of Alicante, he focused his efforts in specializing in the patentability analysis and the drafting and prosecution of patent applications, as well as infringement risk and patent validity studies. He is Spanish IP attorney since 2003 and he passed the European Qualifying Examination (EQE) and became a European Patent Attorney on 2005.
During these years he has also acquired much experience in patent disputes, actively participating and coordinating negotiations and patent litigation in different countries.

Ismael has been continually committed to the creation of a patent culture in our environment. In order to contribute to do so, in 2008 he proposed to organize a specialized patent course designed for companies in the Basque Innovation Agency (Innobasque), giving raise to the Course of Patent Specialization for Companies. He is the director of the course with the collaboration of Innobasque, the Basque business development agency (SPRI) and Enterprise Europe Network, and under the organization of the Mondragon University. More than 100 people have attended the course by now.
He is a teacher of the European Patent Law Course organized by the Centre d’Études Internationales de la Propriété Intellectuelle (CEIPI), the Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI) and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), of the IP Administration Course organized by the EOI and the SPTO, and of the MBA Executive organized by Mondragon Unibertsitatea. He also teaches the IP module (“Active IP Management as competitive advantage”) of the Innobideak Prestakuntza program of SPRI and Euskalit, He acts also as a lecturer in other training courses on patents for both working professionals and university students, and is a regular speaker at forums, seminars and conferences on patents.

Ismael dedicates more and more time to advise in active IP management and strategy, aware that it is essential to have an IP strategy and that it is aligned with the business strategy.

On July 2019 he obtained the European Patent Litigation Certificate in the Politecnico di Milano, which has provided him a better understanding of the patent practice in countries like Germany, UK and France, and therefore a more complete view for advising in conflicts in the European sphere. Thanks to this certificate he will be entitled to represent his clients before the Unified Patent Court when the unitary patent system enters into force.

He is currently an elected member of the European Patent Institute (epi) and a member of the Board of the Spanish Group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI).

The guide “IAM Patent 1000 – The World’s Leading Patent Professionals” has cited Ismael once again as a highly recommended patent attorney: https://www.iam-media.com/directories/patent1000/rankings/spain
